The tentacles of the BEAST spread to Saturday

albeit my last post was the premiere of sxsw's movie extravaganza, friday march 13th, i failed to mention that, sorry. saturday the 14th holds many more delectable shorts, documentaries, features, etc... what i suggest festival and filmgoers view, or at least try to view, on saturday the 14th are as follows;

screening in the reel shorts 1 category and beginning @ 11 a.m. in the alamo lamar 1 are alexandria a story that includes bookstores, the end of civilization, and southeast asia. all of these are subjects i find intriguing. hug is the story of a musical virtuoso at a very pertinent, and unmedicated point in his recording career. "isis avenue intimately documents a 'crime scene cleanup' crew's excavation of the home left abandoned by its deceased owner in ingelwood, california." sunday mornings is a glimpse of a woman returning to her flat from an "extended drinking session," something most can identify with.

sweethearts of the prison rodeo is having its world premiere. this documentary explores the prison rodeo in an oklahoma prison on the actual prison grounds. sweethearts of the prison rodeo is directed by bradley beesley, the same director who brought the world okie noodling. showing @ 11 a.m. paramount theatre.

"died young stayed pretty is the first feature documentary to take a candid look at the renaissance of north america's underground indie-rock poster movement spurred on by the launch of gigposters.com." the documentary is having its u.s. premiere and is showing @ 12 p.m. alamo lamar 3.

45365 is a look into middle america and allows its viewers to draw their own conclusions. the documentary should be a timely glimpse in to america's heartland and its inhabitants that will one day make or break the struggling region. this is a world premiere and is showing @ 12:30 p.m. austin convention center.

screening in the reel shorts 2 category and beginning @ 1:30 p.m. in the alamo lamar 1 is a'mare a film set in sicily and based on two friends whose lives center around the sea. autopilot is a narrative where "a bicycle propels forward with no rider and adolescent boys make internet videos." john wayne hated horses; "on a hot summer day, a father and his young son struggle with their differing ideas about masculinity, boredom, and the proper way to play with army toys."

daytime drinking is a narrative and on the marquee it has been dubbed "a wild fable on the bottle." "now hyuk-jiin has to find a way to get out of the world's worst hangover and to end his drunken odyssey." drunken odysseys are journeys of pure, destitute passion, looks very interesting as a debut from korean filmmaker noh young-seok. showing @ 1:45 p.m. alamo lamar 2.

the world premiere of bomber is a narrative about an older man recruiting his son to drive him to an old village he bombed during world war 11, during their vacation. very pertinent, and maybe veterans everywhere can learn something from this film. showing @ 2 p.m. alamo ritz 1.

pulling john is a documentary world premiere about a legendary arm wrestler coping with aging, similar to strongman's premise. showing @ 3 p.m. austin convention center.

sunshine; "young, pregnant, single and unprepared the daughter/director struggles with the incredible ironies of the family, as she struggles to raise her own daughter and understand the plight of her biological mother." sunshine looks like a very noble effort from karen skloss in her documentary world premiere. showing @ 3 p.m. alamo ritz 2.

favela on blast is a documentary on the sub-culture of rio de janeiro's ghettos (favelas). city of god was excellent and this film is in the same vein, but real. showing @ 4 p.m. hideout.

every aspiring underground filmmaker has been directly inspired or indirectly inspired by the kuchar brothers, and it came from kuchar is the world premiere documentary of their lives and "greatest hits,"directed by jennifer kroot, george kuchar's protege'. the film contains interviews with john waters and wayne wang just to name a few. showing @ 5 p.m. alamo lamar 3.

objectified is gary hustwit's newest documentary having its world premiere at sxsw. hustwit brought us moog and with this film he asks "what we can learn about who we are, and who we want to be, from the objects with which we surround ourselves?" showing @ 5 p.m. paramount.

sons of a gun is a documentary with an insane cast of subjects and experiences. this film looks like it has to be seen to be believed. this is sons of a gun's world premiere. showing @ 5:15 p.m. austin convention center.

beetle queen conquers tokyo is exactly as the title states, a documentary concerning japan's obsession with insects (maybe not everything). this world premiere might make some squeemish, but it seems fascinating. showing @ 5:30 p.m. alamo ritz 2.

calling e.t. is a little scientology, a little yayweh, and alot of extra terrestials. the documentary's subjects are persons preparing, and debating on how to present themselves to aliens when they touchdown. showing @ 6 p.m. hideout.

winnebago man is the film of hilarious out takes of, what else, a winnebago salesman filming a sales video. underground favorite, who knew fu@* could still be so funny? showing @ 7 p.m. alamo lamar 1.

american boy is scorsese and friends entertained "by steven prince's (subject of an american prince) stories about his middle-class jewish childhood, his experience with drugs and guns, and his relationship with his father." scorsese, come on, and the guy from taxi driver who sells travis bickle his guns! documentary showing @ 7:30 p.m. alamo lamar 2.

moon: "before returning to earth after three years on the moon, things go horribly wrong for astronaut sam bell." sam rockwell stars in this film, you know welcome to collinwood, confessions of a dangerous mind, matchstick men, all great films virtually overlooked by hollywood, except the later. showing 2 7:30 p.m. paramount.

roadsworth: crossing the line is a documentary film about a stencil graffiti artist who is "prosecuted," boo-hoo, but his stencil looks well done, looks worth checking out. showing @ 8 p.m. hideout.

best worst movie is what it says it is. the film is a documentary about troll 2 and the actors and director that made the film possible. a saga of terrible cinema and the cult-like-infamy that comes along with it. showing @ 9:30 p.m. alamo lamar 1.

what if all the bees disappeared? the last beekeeper poses just this question. i know everyone heard about the bees' thinning population, but this is the real thing. slightly frightening, and looks extremely informative. showing @ 9:30 p.m. austin convention center.

the midnight shorts showcase beginning @ 11 p.m. at the alamo ritz 2 has some notable selections; food for thought poses abstinence punishments, i live in the woods looks really interesting including outdoor stop-motion animation, and receive bacon is "a raunchy bathroom tryst ... interrupted by an unfortunate case of the giggles." treevenge is a jason eisener short, and this young director won robert rodriguez's sxsw grindhouse trailer competition, real curious to see the trees reciprocating revenge. warm and fuzzy feeling is "a warm and fuzzy treat for grandma."

zombie film? pontypool looks entertaining on the surface, but could be a disappointment like half of the zombie films ever made. political satire, social climates, and the basic fear of every body going ape sh%#, so we still have to give pontypool a chance. not to mention this is a chance to see stephen mchattie (nite owl in the anticipated watchmen) in another role. showing @ 11:30 p.m. lamar 1.

troll 2, well this is the best worst movie ever made. camp. showing @ 11:45 p.m. alamo lamar 3.

black has famous french actor, mc jean gab'1, playing the hero as opposed to the villian. i've never heard of him, but a self described "blacksplotation" film consisting of elements such as "black magic, ... mutant arms dealers, ... and a truckload of knuckle sandwiches" screams a well spent 2 hours. fantastic fest selection showing @ 11:59 p.m. alamo lamar 2.
